Thatch is a layer of living and dead organic matter that occurs between the green matter and the soil surface. Excessive thatch (over 1/2 inch thick) creates a favorable environment for lawn damaging insects and disease, an unfavorable growing environment for grass roots and can interfere with some lawn care practices.
Core aeration offers many benefits for your lawn, and has proven to be one of the most essential processes in maintaining a healthy, thick lawn.
The process opens up the lawn by removing small plugs of soil and thatch, allowing more air, water and nutrients to reach the root zone, which will lead to better plant growth.
The microorganisms in the plugs that remain on the surface will dissolve back into the thatch layer to help it breakdown, naturally. The process also reduces compaction.
If your thatch problem is severe, you’ll want to have lawn core aeration performed several times a year, preferably twice at a minimum. Lawn aeration can be done any time of the year as long as the lawn isn't soggy.
